This situation happens more than borrowers realise: you paid your EMI on time. You have the bank statement showing the deduction on the due date. But your CIBIL report shows a "030" (30 days late) or "090" (90 days late) for that month.

Your score has dropped 40 points for a payment you made.

This is a lender reporting error — and it is fully correctable. Here is the step-by-step process.

Why This Happens

Timing mismatch: You paid on the due date. But your bank processed the transfer to the lender the following day. The lender's system recorded the payment as one day late. One day of DPD shows as "030" in their monthly reporting to CIBIL.

System error at loan closure: The most common time for reporting errors. You paid the final EMI; the lender's system marked it received, but the auto-reporting module had already transmitted the month's DPD data as "default" before the payment was logged.

Technical glitches: Lender system maintenance, data migration, or processing delays can result in batches of incorrect DPD data being sent to CIBIL.

NACH timing: If you use NACH (auto-debit), the debit instruction from your bank reaches the lender's collection account at different times depending on the payment system. A debit initiated on the due date may credit to the lender one banking day later.

Documents You Need Before Disputing

Gather all of these before filing:

Bank statement: Showing the specific month's EMI deduction — confirm the exact date the amount left your account

Payment receipt or transaction reference: Any confirmation from your bank or the lender's app showing the payment was made on time

CIBIL report: Your credit report showing the specific month and DPD that you are disputing. Note the exact account number and the reporting month.

Loan account statement: From the lender, showing all payments and their credited dates

If there is a discrepancy between when the payment left your bank and when the lender credited it — the key document is the bank statement showing the payment date.

Step 1: Dispute With the Lender First

Before going to CIBIL, contact the lender. This is often faster and always necessary.

Send an email to the lender's Nodal Officer (not just customer care):

*"Subject: Incorrect DPD Reporting to CIBIL — Loan Account [NUMBER]

My CIBIL report shows [030/060/090] DPD for [MONTH/YEAR] on loan account [NUMBER]. This is incorrect. Attached is my bank statement showing EMI payment of ₹[AMOUNT] on [DATE] — on or before the due date of [DUE DATE].

I request immediate correction of the DPD entry with CIBIL to "000" for [MONTH/YEAR] and confirmation within 7 working days.

Step 2: File a CIBIL Online Dispute Simultaneously

Do not wait for the lender's response. File at cibil.com > Dispute Centre > Online Dispute at the same time.

In the dispute form: Select the specific account Select "Account Status / DPD" as the dispute type Describe: "DPD shows [030/090] for [month]. I paid on [date] — bank statement attached. Correct DPD should be 000." Upload your bank statement and payment receipt

CIBIL will contact the lender for verification. If your payment proof is clear, this is almost always resolved in your favour within 30 days.

Step 3: Escalate If Not Resolved in 30 Days

If neither the lender nor CIBIL has corrected the error after 30 days:

RBI Ombudsman (cms.rbi.org.in): File a complaint against the lender for: Incorrect CIBIL reporting causing demonstrable score damage Failure to respond to legitimate dispute within 30 days

The Ombudsman has ordered compensation in cases of incorrect CIBIL reporting — sometimes up to ₹10,000–₹20,000 beyond the correction itself, for the harm caused to the borrower.

What Score Recovery to Expect After Correction

If your dispute is successful and the DPD is corrected to "000": A corrected single 030 DPD typically recovers 20–40 points within the next reporting cycle (30–45 days) A corrected 090 DPD can recover 60–100 points depending on the rest of your credit profile The recovery happens as soon as the lender submits the corrected data to CIBIL
